Harold B. Garner, MD, 62, Coleman, died Thursday morning, December 21, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.  The oldest of three children born to Ralph and Eiko Jean (Ueki) Garner was born April 17, 1955 in Tokyo, Japan.  Being the oldest child, Harold would become known to his family as Kumasama (Lord Bear), a lifelong handle he was proud to have.   As a toddler, Harold moved with his family to Colorado before the family settled in Radcliff, Kentucky where he attended public school and graduated high school.  Following graduation, he entered the US Army and served during the Vietnam War.  Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he attended college UK-Lexington for undergraduate and later graduating from UK-Louisville medical school.  In 1981 he married Peggy McCormick and they had two children together, the couple lived in Marshfield, WI where Harold completed his residency.  In 1988 he moved to Oconto Falls where he was a doctor of internal medicine for the Artwich Clinic which later became Bellin Clinic until retiring in 1999.  “Doc Garner” as he was affectionately known by his patients, once served as medical director of Community Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls.

On February 2, 2002 he married Cheryl Zaden-Skarda and the couple made their home near Kelly Lake.  Harold was a proud alumni of the University of Kentucky Wildcats and a member of the American Medical Association.  Harold also had a passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles and belonged to ABATE as well as enjoyed computers and being a fishing buddy to his good friend Nate Smithberg.

Survivors are his wife, Cheryl Garner, Coleman; two children, Scott Garner and Melissa Raku (Welmer) van der Wel, all of CO; his mother, Eiko-Jean Garner, KY; Cheryl’s two children, Scot (Rachel) Skarda, Oconto and their children, Riley, Trent, Rex and Parker; Angi (Wade) Kizewski, Milwaukee and their children Noah and Chloe; one brother and sister, David (Lynn) Garner and Jean Garner, KY; two very special friend families, Joe and Mona Hanlin, NC and their children Sean, Rory and Erin Hanlin-Mercer, MD; Nate MD and Kerrie Smithberg, Chippewa Falls.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation with the urn present will take place after 1pm Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls until the time of service.  Memorial services will be held 3:30pm Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Bill Kamke officiating.

The Garner family would like to thank Dr. Michael Volk, Holly Speltzer, MSN, FNP-C, CTTS and the staff of Green Bay Oncology as well as the staff of St. Clare Med-Surg for the care and concern shown Harold during their time together.
